Kyphosis Treatment

Kyphosis is a forward bending of the spine which produces a roundback curvature.

A normal thoracic kyphosis can be between 20° to 45°. When the "roundness" of the

upper spine increases past 45° it is called "hyperkyphosis". Hyperkyphosis may be

caused by an underlying structural abnormality in the bones of the spine

(Scheuermann kyphosis) though also can be found in people without a structural

cause known as postural kyphosis.

Treatment approach is based on clinical assessment and investigation

findings. In a lot of cases, were the spinal curve is not extensively progressed, the

treatment can involve only specific physiotherapeutic exercises based on Schroth

method, without the need of bracing. These specific exercises are based on postural

auto-correction, elongation of the spine and patient’s education to maintain the

corrected posture during the activities of daily living.

At Physiotime we are specialised in Schroth method by Barcelona Scoliosis

Physical Therapy School and we apply specific physiotherapeutic exercises for the

management of kyphosis, based on each patient’s needs.
