Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis is a complex multifactorial three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformity. For

this reason, physical therapy for scoliosis requires a 3D approach to address the

curve from all angles and will take into account the different types of the condition.

Schroth method is one of the most well-known, evidence based physiotherapy

approaches for the management of scoliosis. It consist of specific physiotherapeutic

exercises that are based on 3D auto-correction of the spine, stabilisation in

correction and patients education to maintain the corrected posture during the

activities of daily living.

The method aims to:

• Prevent scoliosis from advancing or to partially correct it.

• Improve pain levels and spine appearance.

• Improve breathing function

• Improve patient’s quality of life.

Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and Society on Scoliosis Orthopedic and

Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT) support that the management of patients with

scoliosis cobb angle less than 25°, should involve only physiotherapy scoliosis

specific exercises (PSSE).
